County Council voted in nefarious of extending Cherry Point moratorium
BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Whatcom County Council voted 4-3 Tuesday night in favor of extending an emergency moratorium on exporting un-refined fossil fuels from Cherry Point.
Ben Elenbaas was a dissenting vote and says he thinks it goes farther than banning those exports.
But councilmember Todd Donovan says existing Cherry Point facilities have continued to expand with the moratorium in place.
The council majority says the moratorium is needed while the planning commission continues work on a comprehensive plan that includes Cherry Point industries.
